Your Burning Questions Answered

No you do not. Some of our most successful students began right off the couch with no experience or athletic background. You do NOT need to be strong, flexible, or be in good shape to begin Jiu-Jitsu or attend any of our classes. Through training, you will develop these attributes plus improve many other attributes. Although weight-loss isn’t our primary goal, we have students who have lost up to 100 pounds from simply training 3-4 days a week consistently.

Workout clothes. A simple T-shirt and shorts will do for your first class. We have all the equipment and uniforms to loan you on day one.

This depends on the classes you choose to attend.

For Jiu-Jitsu, both kids and adults will need to purchase a GI (also known as a kimono) and for NOGI Jiu-Jitsu classes you need a rash guard and fight shorts. We recommend both male and female students wear your rash guard underneath during all Jiu-Jitsu classes in the GI.

For Kickboxing, you will need to purchase gloves. All other equipment is optional or provided by the academy.

No. The vast majority of people who train are not competitors but rather hobbyists. Competition is a great way to challenge and test yourself but we are also doing that everyday in training. We encourage students who want to compete but there is no expectation or requirement. Once you’ve been training for awhile, you can decide whether or not competition is for you or not.

Yes. Regardless of gender or age, our classes are for everyone and anyone can participate.

No. We have students from 4 to 80. One of our instructors is 70 years old and still lives training. Age is no limit.

For Adults: White, Blue, Purple, Brown, Black

For Kids (under 16): White, Yellow, Orange, and Green

Promotions are at the discretion of the instructors. Coach Ben decides on the promotions for the adults and Coach Herbert decides on the promotions of the kids. Promotions are a subjective process based on several criteria. Generally we look for participation, consistency, attitude, knowledge, and skill on the mats. Character and leadership traits become more important to these decisions at higher belt ranks.

This depends on the individual. Coach Ben was promoted to black belt in 12 years, which is considered an average time. Generally it takes individuals 8 to 15 years to reach black belt in Jiu-Jitsu. Most students reach the blue belt level within 2 years, then each subsequent belt takes roughly 2-5 years until Black. Once you reach black belt, you will receive degrees (stripes) every 3-5 years.

No. We do not have contracts because we believe loyalty goes both ways.
